"LE PETIT GARÇON"
de Serge Reggiani

You should listen to this song if : You love your child, boy or girl.

About this song : A painfully beautiful song, which, nonetheless, has nothing to do with Serge Reggiani's personal drama, that is, the suicide of his elder son, Stephan, in 1980 (whilst the song was written in 1967).Prelude by Jacques Prevert, a well-known French poet, and also a close friend of Serge Reggiani's (to see together in the first photo of this video).

About the author : Serge Reggiani was an actor, a writer, a painter and a singer. The separation with his wife, and the suicide of his son, led him to depression and alcoholism, which he tried to fight. He was a great interpreter , that's why it is sometimes better to look for his live performance, instead of his studio recording. Other famous songs are : Les loups sont entrés dans Paris, Sarah, Il suffirait de presque rien, Ma vieille, Le déserteur, Ma fille, Votre fille a vingt ans... . To know more about him : Serge Reggiani.

Les paroles, and their approximate translation

Ce n'est pas moi qui chante,                                                     It’s not me who is singing
C'est les fleurs que j'ai vues...                                                    It’s the flowers that I’ve seen…
Ce n'est pas moi qui rit,                                                            It’s not me who is laughing,
C'est le vin que j'ai bu...                                                            It’s the wine that I’ve drunk,
Ce n'est pas moi qui pleure,                                                      It’s not me who is crying,
C'est mon amour perdu...                                                          It’s my lost love…

Ce soir, mon petit garçon,                                                          Tonight my little boy
Mon enfant, mon amour,                                                             my child, my love,
Il pleut sur la maison,                                                                it’s raining on the house
Mon garçon, mon amour,                                                          my boy, my love,
Comme tu lui ressembles!                                                         How you look like her !
On reste tous les deux,                                                             We’re staying the two of us,
On va bien jouer ensemble,                                                       we’ll play well together,
On est là tous les deux,                                                              we are here the two of us
Seuls...
alone…

Ce soir elle ne rentre pas,                                                          Tonight she doesn’t come back,
Je ne sais plus, je ne sais pas,                                                   I don’t know, I’m not sure
Elle écrira demain, peut-être                                                        She will write tomorrow, maybe
Nous aurons une lettre.                                                                We will receive a letter.
Il pleut sur le jardin,                                                                      It’s raining on the garden,
Je vais faire du feu,                                                                       I’m going to make a fire
Je n'ai pas de chagrin,                                                                  I’m not sad
On est là tous les deux,                                                               we are here the two of us,
Seuls...                                                                                      alone…

Attends, je sais des histoires:                                                   Wait, I know some stories :
Il était une fois...                                                                       Once upon a time…
Il pleut dans ma mémoire, je crois,                                             It’s raining in my memory, I believe,
Ne pleure pas!...                                                                       Don’t cry !
Attends, je sais des histoires,                                                   Wait, I know some stories :
Mais il fait un peu froid, ce soir,                                                  But it’s a bit cold tonight,
Une histoire de gens qui s'aiment,                                         a story of people who love each other,
Une histoire de gens qui s'aiment,                                         a story of people who love each other,
Tu vas voir,                                                                                You will see
Ne t'en vas pas,                                                                          Do not go
Ne me laisse pas!...                                                                    Do not leave me !...

Je ne sais plus faire du feu,                                                       I don’t know any more how to make fire
Mon enfant, mon amour,                                                           My child, my love,
Je ne peux plus grand-chose,                                                    I can’t do much any more,
Mon garçon, mon amour,                                                          My boy, my love,
Comme tu lui ressembles!                                                         How much do you look like her !
On est là tous les deux,                                                            We are here the two of us,
Perdus parmi les choses,                                                           Lost among the things
Dans cette grande chambre,                                                       In this big room,
Seuls...
Alone…

On va jouer à la guerre                                                                We will play at war
Et tu t'endormiras...                                                                     And you will fall asleep
Ce soir, elle ne sera pas là,                                                         Tonight she won’t be here
Je ne sais plus, je ne sais pas...                                                 I don’t know, I’m not sure
Je n'aime pas l'hiver,                                                                    I don’t like winter,
Il n'y a plus de feu,                                                                        There’s no more fire,
Il n'y a plus rien à faire,                                                                There’s nothing to do,
Qu'à jouer tous les deux,                                                             except play together
Seuls...                                                                                               Alone…

Attends, je sais des histoires:                                                   Wait, I know some stories :
Il était une fois...                                                                       Once upon a time…
Je n'ai plus de mémoire, je crois,                                               I’ve lost memory, I believe,
Ne pleure pas!                                                                          Don’t cry !
Attends, je sais des histoires,                                                   Wait, I know some stories :
Mais il est un peu tard, ce soir,                                                But it’s a bit late tonight,
L'histoire des gens qui s'aimèrent                                              a story of people who loved each other
Et qui jouèrent à la guerre...                                                      and played at war
Écoute-moi!                                                                              Listen to me !
Elle n'est plus là...                                                                     She’s here no more,
Non... ne pleure pas!...                                                               No… Don’t cry !

Note : Why do I suggest different  albums for different countries ? Well, strange as it may seems, there is sometimes a HUGE difference of price for the same album in different countries (supposing it's available) ; and what is a good bargain somewhere is a total rip-off elsewhere. So, for each country, I usually look for the two or three albums that have all (or most of) the "must have" songs, and then I compare the prices and carefully weigh the pros and cons...

Exceptionally, for some countries I don't suggest the "CD format" album, but its equivalent as "mp3 download" album, because :
- the original CD, when available, is sold by resellers at a very high price ;
- the mp3 album is really a good bargain for its price ;
- Compared to the other albums of this artist, the mp3 album has the advantage of being the original recording, remastered.
